Privacy Policy

Last updated 2 August 2026

In short

Our apps work without sending anything about your child anywhere. Their name, progress and stars stay on the device. If you consent, the app sends us anonymous usage data — which game was played, where a word was hard — so we can improve the app. We never know who the child is, we send nothing to advertisers, and the data stays in South Africa.

Who we are

Slimkoppies is operated by [REGISTERED ENTITY NAME]. Our Information Officer, as required by South Africa's POPIA, is [INFORMATION OFFICER NAME], reachable at [privaatheid@slimkoppies.co.za].

This policy covers all of our apps, including KlankKidz and TelKidz, and this website.

What stays on the device

The following is stored only in local browser storage on your own device and is never transmitted to us:

We cannot see any of it. It is gone when you delete the profile or clear the browser's data for this site.

What we receive — only with your consent

If you answered yes to the consent prompt, the app sends us events containing:

The app cannot send more than this. The list of fields is fixed in code on both ends — anything else is discarded before it is stored.

We use it for one thing: seeing where children get stuck or lose interest, so we can fix the app. It is never used to target advertising or to build a profile of a child.

What we never collect

The microphone

In some games a child can say a sound or word aloud. This uses the speech recognition built into the browser itself.

This is the one place where something from your child reaches anyone else: most browsers send that short piece of audio to their own servers to recognise it — Google's in Chrome, Apple's in Safari. That is governed by their privacy policies, not ours. We never receive the audio and we never store it. We only learn whether the word was said correctly.

The microphone is always optional. Every game that offers it has a button to tap the sounds instead, and a child can use the entire app without it.

Parent accounts and payment

If you create an account or buy an app, we store your email address and a record of the transaction. Payments are handled by our payment provider — we never see your card number.

This information belongs to you, the parent. It is never joined to the anonymous usage data above: we cannot tell which child's play belongs to which account, and it is deliberately built that way.

Where it is stored

On our own server in Johannesburg, South Africa. The data does not leave the country.

We use no third-party analytics service — no Google Analytics, no Facebook, nothing of that kind. Nobody else receives this data and we never sell it.

How long we keep it

Consent, and how to withdraw it

We ask the first time a profile is used, behind a sum a child would not be able to answer. You can change your mind at any time in the parent dashboard.

Withdrawing consent stops sending immediately and discards anything not yet sent. If any parent on a device says no, that applies to the whole device — even if another profile later says yes.

Your rights

Under POPIA you may ask what information we hold about you or your child, have it corrected, or have it deleted. Write to [privaatheid@slimkoppies.co.za] and we will respond within 30 days.

For the anonymous usage data we need the install identifier to find your rows — it is visible in the parent dashboard. Without it we genuinely cannot tell which data is yours, because it is not linked to your name.

You may also complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa.

Changes

If we change this policy we change the date above. If the change affects what we collect, we ask for consent again rather than assuming the old answer still stands.
